Footpath work

But for the efforts of Victorian mill-owners, eager to exploit water power to run their machinery, most of the Alva Glen would be inaccessible from below. The path up the glen is mainly artificial, hewn out of the rock, and in some places built as a shelf fixed into the steep wall of the ravine.

Like all paths, the Alva Glen path needs regular maintenance, to make sure that the drains are kept clear and that damage from the periodic inundations by the burn is repaired.

In 2009, the Trust commissioned a survey of the condition of the path. This survey resulted in a list of works that need to be done on the path. Where possible, volunteers from the Trust will do these jobs. We will commission contractors to do the remaining jobs.
