Daffodil Day

Make a picnic and come enjoy the daffodils as you take a walk around the Glen with your family! For even more fun on your walk let the kids join in on our Annual Easter Egg Hunt.

Why not sponsor a duck and enjoy the Grand duck Race at 2 p.m. from the waterfall.

What came first the duck or the egg? Well in our case it's the egg. Bring a hard boiled egg and spoon to take part in the egg and spoon race at 1.30p.m, just before the duck race.

Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting will be held in the function room of the No. 5 Inn, Alva. This year we are pleased to welcome along guest speakers from the Ochil Landscape Partnership (OLP). Refreshments will be available.

Alva Glen Illuminations

The Alva Glen Illuminations are back for 2010! This event will be run by volunteers with the Alva Glen Heritage Trust.  Come along for an evening of family fun!

Community Woodland Event

The Community Woodlands Association are joining forces with Alva Glen Heritage Trust, the Woodland Orchestra and Brotus Rural Crafts to provide a day of traditional craft and music in Alva Glen.

The activities will begin at 11am on Saturday and we would love for you to come along and have a go on a  traditional pole lathe, bang some drums or tinkle on the wooden xylophone!  Members of Alva Glen Heritage Trust will be on hand to provide information about one of Scotland’s finest industrial glens.

Upper Glen Path Work

On the first Sunday in June we will be working on the paths in the Upper Glen.  We'll be fitting a few water bars to divert rainfall off the path and clearing out the drains.

Everyone is welcome; we meet in the car park in the glen at 1100.  We'll provide all the tools and training, just come along in stout footwear and bring a snack!

Herb Walk

Join us in a guided walk around the glen led by a local medical herbalist.  This is an opportunity to learn about the different plants to be found in the glen and their uses past and present.  Everyone is welcome; we'll meet in the car park in the glen at 13:00.  After the walk we'll have herbal refreshments.

BBQ and Sensory Garden Planting

In August we'll be holding a BBQ in the glen, as well as fitting a new set of planters. The planters will make up a "sensory garden", to enable the less active to see the plants found in the Upper Glen.

Pre Illuminations Clean up

This is the final workday before the illuminations!

We'll be clearing up litter and preparing the glen for the lighting.

Afternoon Forage Walk

There will be a guided forage walk around the glen, 3rd October 13:00 till 15:00.  Join us as we explore the glen in search of  useful plants, looking out for the edible and the interesting.  The walk will be based mostly in the lower glen area.  After the walk there will be forage refreshments and tasting session.  Everyone is welcome, meet in the car park in the glen.

It's time to prepare for the winter, so we'll be checking all the paths, clearing leaves from them and making sure the drains are clear for winter.

Leaf Clearing and Christmas Treats

The last workday of the year.  We need to clear leaves off the paths, and we'll be composting them to put on the flower beds once they've rotted down.

As a bonus for another year of hard work, there will be minced pies and mulled wine!

Evening Work

Now that the nicer weather is here, we are starting a few evening workdays.  We'll meet at 1900 in the car park on Tuesday evening (the 11th) and work until the pub calls too much, then we'll move across there (probably at about half eight).


What we do will depend on the weather and the turn out, but we could start on some more sections of path repair, or continue to fell non-native trees and weed the planted areas.  Hope to see a few of you there

(In theory we'll need to check spoons for glue etc. But we're sure you'll all compete honestly.)

A great night out for ladies of all ages, in the Johnstone Arms Hotel, Alva. The festivities will include...

Sunday Workday

Time for our Sunday workday again! Meeting as usual in the glen car park.
We plan to do some path repairs this week so we hope you can manage to come along.

A walk in the Glen

Come and join Alva Glen Heritage Trust and expert forester Donald McPhillimy for a winter walk in the spectacular Alva Glen.  The walk aims to give participants the knowledge and techniques required to identify and record a wide variety of tree species in a given location.  The walk will have particular focus on the non-native Conifers and specimen trees that have survived in the glen since its use as a formal garden in the 19th Century.
